Religious pilgrimage was an important aspect of medieval life. Pilgrim’s hat badges have been recovered from a river where thankful pilgrims deposited them as a thank you, after a safe return from distant shrines in sometimes distant lands. The fact that river depositions have nothing to do with the orthodox religion of this time suggests a folk Christianity amongst elements the population which was never recorded and has now vanished with very little, if any trace at all. Water depositions in Britain are more usually associated with prehistory and the Iron Age.
lyrics
Mistress of heaven & earth
Lead now the pilgrim
Safe across the sea
Flower, oh bloom of all blooms
Brisk the sea breezes
Keep us
Oh speed us
To thee
Rose of all roses
Queen of the sky
Bear up the pilgrim
Safe on the tide
Star over waves brilliantly
Shine on your faithful
Then safe return we'll see
